NEW YORK, NY—January 2017
Legacy Builders announced the firm renovated a 15,000-square-foot space at Pratt Institute, a renowned Brooklyn-based college, transforming a campus store into an award-winning Film and Video Department.
Legacy Builders worked with WASA/Studio A to build the new Pratt space, designed by Pratt alum and architect Jack Esterson, using free-span trusses, giving it 23-foot ceiling heights and no internal columns.
The building features a stunning series of perforated, sculptural stainless steel panels specifically designed by Pratt architecture professor and sculptor Haresh Lalvani and complemented by Nydree Maple woodwork. The panels wrap around the entrance lobby and envelop rooms requiring sound-proofing and darkness.
The new space includes a surround-sound recording studio, three soundstages that together total 3,000 square feet, two high-end color mixing suites, five classrooms, facility offices, and a 96-seat screening room, all of which feature state-of-the-art audio and video technology to provide specialized sound attenuation.
A stunning floating bridge spans over the building’s first floor and connects classrooms and offices on the second floor while various interstitial spaces throughout serve as dynamic social areas for students to meet and interact.
Sustainable and eco-friendly components of the project include high-efficiency LED lighting and the re-use of pre-existing construction features from the original building including stairs and ductwork. Legacy Builders also installed six HVAC units, as well as new plumbing, electrical, flooring and bathrooms.
The stunning facility was recognized with a citation award at the 2015 American Institute of Architect New York State Design Awards.
